Mohamed Ouahbi takes charge of Morocco with World Cup challenge ahead
Mohamed Ouahbi has become the new head coach of Morocco’s national football team after his appointment in March 2026 to replace Walid Regragui. The 49-year-old coach takes charge only months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, at a time when Morocco has established itself among the leading nations in international football following a series of strong performances in recent years.
Born in Schaerbeek, Belgium, Ouahbi built his reputation through youth development rather than high-profile managerial roles. He spent several years working within the youth academy system of RSC Anderlecht, helping to develop young players and refining a coaching philosophy centered on technical growth and tactical discipline. He also holds the UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in European football.
His career gained significant momentum after joining Morocco’s under-20 national team in March 2022. During his tenure, he introduced a style based on ball possession, aggressive pressing, and effective control of space. His teams regularly alternated between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 formations, combining defensive organization with attacking efficiency. The approach produced remarkable results and culminated in a historic Under-20 World Cup title in 2025, strengthening his standing within Moroccan football.
Ouahbi’s promotion to the senior national team reflects a broader strategy by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to create stronger links between youth national teams and the first team. His familiarity with emerging talents is expected to ease the transition of young players into the senior squad and support long-term squad development.
