Migrants suffer cardiac arrest during attempted channel crossing in northern france
A failed attempt to cross the English Channel turned tragic on Thursday morning along the coast of northern France, where several migrants were found in cardiac arrest following a maritime incident.
Local authorities reported that a small boat, often referred to as a “taxi-boat,” encountered serious difficulties shortly after departure near the coastal town of Equihen-Plage in the Pas-de-Calais region. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene as the situation unfolded.
According to initial accounts from local officials present at the site, the departure attempt appeared to have gone wrong early in the morning, causing several individuals to fall into the water. A number of migrants were later discovered in critical condition, suffering from cardiac arrest, while dozens of others were rescued and brought back to shore.
Survivors were immediately taken care of on the beach, where emergency teams provided thermal blankets and urgent medical assistance. Authorities emphasized that the number of victims remains provisional and could change as rescue operations and investigations continue.
The so-called “taxi-boat” method is increasingly used by smuggling networks. It involves picking up migrants directly from the water to avoid law enforcement patrols stationed along beaches. This practice is widely considered dangerous due to overcrowding, poor weather conditions, and the lack of proper safety equipment.
The incident highlights once again the risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Channel, one of the world’s busiest and most hazardous maritime routes. Earlier this year, similar attempts had already resulted in fatalities, raising concerns among authorities and humanitarian organizations about the growing dangers of irregular migration in the region.
An official update is expected from regional authorities as efforts continue to assess the full scale of the incident.
