Migrant found dead on a beach in northern France

A migrant was found dead Sunday morning on a beach near Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France, amid numerous attempts to cross the English Channel over the weekend, authorities and the prosecutor’s office told AFP.

The body was discovered in Saint-Étienne-au-Mont. The victim’s age and nationality are currently unknown. The Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor’s office will investigate whether this death is linked to a nearby crossing attempt in Equihen-Plage.

Around fifty migrants who failed to set off were rescued early Sunday morning in Equihen-Plage. During the operation, a 49-year-old woman suffering from hypothermia was hospitalized.

This new death brings to at least 27 the number of fatalities in clandestine crossings between France and the UK since the beginning of the year. Small, overcrowded boats, often poorly equipped, continue to carry hundreds of people despite reinforced French security measures and UK financial support. Over 32,000 migrants have reached the UK by small boats so far this year, a record number.
