Michel Portal, iconic figure of contemporary jazz, dies at 90

French musician Michel Portal, a towering presence in contemporary jazz and a pioneer of the European free jazz movement, has died at the age of 90, according to his representatives.

Born in Bayonne in 1935, Portal first gained recognition through classical training. He won top honors in clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in the late 1950s and quickly established himself as a respected soloist. Yet his artistic curiosity soon pushed him beyond traditional boundaries, leading him toward experimentation and improvisation.

A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Portal was equally at ease on the saxophone. Over the decades, he developed a reputation for blending genres, moving fluidly between classical repertoire, avant-garde experimentation and jazz performance. His early embrace of free jazz in the 1960s contributed to shaping a distinctly European voice within a style that had originated in the United States.

Portal also built a significant career as a composer for cinema, earning multiple national awards for film scores. His work for the screen demonstrated the same exploratory spirit that defined his concert performances, combining lyricism with bold harmonic choices.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with leading figures in contemporary music and participated in premieres of works by major avant-garde composers. At the same time, he remained committed to live performance, leading his own ensembles and appearing at prominent festivals in France and abroad.

Widely described as an artist who refused routine, Portal often spoke of his desire to invent “a new kind of language” in music. His discography, spanning several decades, reflects a constant search for renewal rather than adherence to a single style.

With his passing, the European jazz scene loses one of its most inventive and influential voices—an artist who bridged classical rigor and improvisational freedom, and whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians.
