Meta Connect 2026 to spotlight smart glasses, AI and mixed reality
Meta is preparing to host the biggest event on its calendar this year, with Meta Connect set to take place on September 23 and 24 at the company’s headquarters in California.
Once primarily focused on virtual reality, the annual event has expanded to cover Meta’s wider hardware portfolio, artificial intelligence and the company’s long-term metaverse ambitions. This year’s edition is expected to attract particular attention as Meta continues to accelerate its AI development while expanding its smart-glasses strategy.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to deliver the main keynote at 4 p.m. Pacific Time on September 23, or 11 p.m. GMT. Developer presentations and additional sessions will follow on September 24, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Time under the “State of the Union for Developers” program.
One of the main areas of interest is expected to be Meta’s next generation of smart glasses. Reports suggest the company is working on a camera-free version that could rely on additional microphones to provide access to Meta’s AI assistant.
Such a design could make the glasses thinner and closer in appearance to conventional eyewear, while also addressing some of the privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped smart glasses. Ray-Ban has already hinted at new Meta-branded eyewear arriving in the near future.
Another potential highlight is a mixed-reality device reportedly known by the codename Phoenix. Images believed to show the headset have recently appeared in HorizonOS-related material, suggesting a slimmer design that could resemble protective eyewear more than a traditional virtual-reality headset.
Reports indicate that the device could connect through a cable to a separate computing unit and may become one of the first products to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite platform, although Meta has yet to officially confirm those details.
Meta could also provide new information about its ambitions for avatars and the metaverse. The company previously demonstrated holographic avatar concepts alongside its Orion augmented-reality prototype, and reports suggest that new developments could be presented during Zuckerberg’s keynote.
Avatars remain closely connected to Meta’s broader vision for augmented and mixed reality. The company has repeatedly positioned augmented reality as an important component of its long-term approach to building immersive digital environments.
Artificial intelligence is also expected to occupy a significant part of this year’s event. Meta Connect comes after a series of developments surrounding the company’s AI efforts, including its push toward more advanced and potentially autonomous systems.
The company could discuss Muse, its AI agent technology, and how such systems may interact with smart glasses. Developers could also receive updates on efforts to expand the number of third-party applications available on Meta’s eyewear platform.
That software ecosystem could become increasingly important as Meta seeks to turn smart glasses into everyday computing devices rather than simply wearable cameras or accessories.
With new hardware, AI services, mixed-reality technology and developer tools all expected to feature, Meta Connect 2026 could provide a broad picture of how the company intends to connect its hardware and artificial intelligence ambitions. While several of the anticipated announcements remain based on reports and leaks, the event is expected to offer a clearer view of Meta’s strategy for the next generation of wearable and immersive technology.
