Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed hope on Friday of nominating U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he secures a just and lasting end to the war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters after talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Rome, she positioned herself as a bridge between Trump's unconventional diplomacy and skeptical European leaders.
Meloni voiced confidence that Trump could make a decisive impact. "I hope that one day we can award the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump," she said, adding that Europe might join in proposing him should he deliver peace in Ukraine. Her comments come amid Trump's long-pursued Nobel ambitions, highlighted by a recent message to Norway's prime minister where he lamented not receiving the award despite halting multiple conflicts.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who symbolically handed her medal to Trump at the White House this month—a gesture the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified did not transfer the honor. Meloni, who has built close ties with Trump since his return to power, made her remarks as U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian representatives prepared for trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi.
Italy faces constitutional hurdles in fully aligning with Trump's initiatives. His newly unveiled "Peace Council," announced at the Davos World Economic Forum and inviting about 60 nations, names Trump as lifetime president, U.S. representative, and executive board chair—roles clashing with Italy's requirement for equal footing in international bodies. "We need more time; there's work to do," Meloni explained.
Merz echoed those concerns, noting Germany cannot join the council's current governance structure for similar constitutional reasons. Meloni has urged Trump to adjust the framework to accommodate Italy and other European nations. Trump acknowledged this aboard Air Force One, saying Meloni wants to sign on but must consult her legislature. Her Nobel proposal underscores efforts to sustain influence with Trump while upholding European unity, emphasizing that nations like Italy can tip the balance.
