Mehdi Taremi faces absence from Club World Cup due to Iran-Israel conflict
Inter Milan’s Iranian forward, Mehdi Taremi, is expected to miss the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States as he cannot leave Iran amid the closure of the country’s airspace. This restriction follows ongoing aerial clashes between Iran and Israel.
Taremi was named in Inter’s squad for the 32-team tournament and was anticipated to join the team in Los Angeles. However, Italian and US media reported on Saturday that he will likely miss the opening match on Tuesday and possibly the entire competition. According to Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, the striker will not participate in any of the matches.
Inter Milan has been in constant communication with Iranian authorities based in Italy to support Taremi and explore possible solutions, but none are currently feasible. The player remains in a safe location in Tehran, protected from ongoing bombings.
The team is scheduled to begin their campaign against Monterrey FC from Mexico at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, but Taremi’s involvement appears unlikely. The 32-year-old, who captains the Iranian national team, recently scored in Iran’s World Cup qualifying match against North Korea on June 10 and received the inaugural Iranian Toopa Award (Golden Ball) a day later.
Although the forward’s planned departure date was not confirmed, his trip was halted after Israel launched attacks on Iran on Friday morning, prompting Iran to close its airspace indefinitely. Since then, both countries have exchanged fire.
Taremi joined Inter Milan on a three-year deal in July 2024 and has scored three goals in 43 appearances for the club.
