Mauritania: The Strategic Hub in Realizing Morocco's Atlantic Ambitions for the Sahel
During a press briefing on Monday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita underscored the pivotal role of Mauritania in translating King Mohammed VI's ambitious Atlantic vision for the Sahel into tangible progress.
The Royal Initiative, unveiled by the King in a groundbreaking speech last year, seeks to enhance infrastructure across the Sahel and establish connectivity with existing transportation and communication networks. The ultimate aim is to facilitate shared prosperity in the region.
According to Bourita, the landlocked nations of the Sahel are set to heavily depend on stable, coastal Mauritania as their primary gateway to the Atlantic.
"His Majesty the King envisions Mauritania as a fundamental actor in this initiative," Bourita declared during a joint press conference with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug.
Characterizing the relationship between Morocco and Mauritania as "unique and historical," deeply rooted in familial ties, Bourita emphasized the profound significance both nations attach to advancing ties across various fronts.
A recent conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani underscored the strong bond between the two nations. The leaders pledged to continue propelling bilateral relations forward, with Mauritania positioned as an anchor of stability for the entire Sahel region.
Already serving as Morocco's primary African trading partner, Mauritania has increasingly assumed a central role in Rabat's Atlantic-focused development plans for Northwest Africa. With a foundation of robust diplomatic trust, economists anticipate a deepening of economic ties between the two nations.
"His Majesty aspires to maximize the potential of bilateral relations," Bourita affirmed. For the Kingdom, Mauritania represents a critical component for unlocking regional prosperity.
