Massive fireworks explosion sparks fire and evacuation in yolo county

A devastating explosion at a fireworks storage facility in Yolo County, California, near the community of Esparto, caused a massive fire and forced mandatory evacuations. Occurring shortly before 6 p.m., the blast sent towering black smoke into the sky, visible for miles, and triggered multiple secondary explosions.

Swift emergency response and evacuation measures

Fire crews from local districts, assisted by CAL FIRE ground and air units, responded rapidly to the blaze, which spread to nearby vegetation, scorching approximately 78 to 80 acres. Authorities established a one-mile evacuation zone, impacting parts of Esparto and the neighboring community of Madison, to ensure public safety and allow emergency teams to work unimpeded.

Residents described chaotic scenes as loud booms echoed and fireworks erupted amid the flames. The incident caused brief power outages in nearby neighborhoods and led to road closures around the site to maintain a secure perimeter for firefighting efforts.

Investigation underway

The Yolo County Office of Emergency Services confirmed the facility’s involvement in the explosion and received numerous reports of fireworks detonating during the fire. While the cause remains under investigation, officials emphasized that the storage facility was operated by a licensed pyrotechnics professional adhering to state and federal safety regulations.

The California State Fire Marshal has deployed an arson and bomb investigation team to determine the cause of the explosion. Authorities have not reported any injuries or fatalities but continue to monitor the situation as firefighters work to extinguish spot fires and prevent further damage.

Call for public caution

Officials urged residents to steer clear of the affected area to allow emergency personnel to operate efficiently and safely. Updates will be provided as more information emerges.

This incident highlights the inherent risks of storing fireworks and underscores the critical need for strict safety measures to mitigate such disasters.
