Massive drug trafficking ring exposed in Tangier after 700 kg chira seizure
Authorities in northern Morocco have dismantled a major drug trafficking attempt following the seizure of approximately 700 kilograms of cannabis resin, commonly known as “chira,” cleverly concealed within artificial watermelons designed to evade detection.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, took place in the Gzenaya area on the outskirts of Tangier. It was conducted by the regional judicial police in coordination with the Royal Gendarmerie, acting on precise intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
According to security sources, officers intercepted three vehicles suspected of being involved in the transport of illicit substances. Four individuals, aged between 32 and 39, were arrested at the scene. All suspects are believed to be linked to a broader criminal network engaged in international drug trafficking.
Subsequent searches conducted at the residence of one of the detainees led to the discovery of a carefully prepared shipment of chira. The narcotics had been compressed and molded into plastic-wrapped blocks shaped and colored to resemble watermelons, a concealment method intended to mislead inspection controls during cross-border transport.
Investigations further revealed that all four individuals have prior criminal records, including offenses related to violent crime and narcotics trafficking. Authorities believe the group was operating within a structured network with both national and international connections.
The suspects have been placed in custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Ongoing inquiries aim to identify additional collaborators and dismantle the wider trafficking infrastructure associated with the operation.
This seizure comes amid intensified security efforts in northern Morocco, a region frequently targeted by drug trafficking networks due to its strategic proximity to European smuggling routes across the Mediterranean.
