Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian-Spanish Nobel laureate, passed away on Sunday in Lima at the age of 89, marking the end of an era. He was the last great representative of the golden generation of Latin American literature, which also included figures like Gabriel García Márquez and Julio Cortázar.

Born into a middle-class Peruvian family, Vargas Llosa played a key role in the Latin American literary boom of the 1960s and 1970s. His death was announced by his son, Álvaro, who shared the news on X, along with his siblings Gonzalo and Morgana. They expressed their sadness, stating that Vargas Llosa died peacefully in the presence of his family.

The Peruvian government declared a national day of mourning on April 14 and ordered the flags on public buildings to be flown at half-mast.

While the family did not disclose the exact cause of his death, Vargas Llosa's health had been fragile since his return to Lima in 2024, after leaving Madrid. For several months, he had stepped away from public life.

Vargas Llosa's passing has deeply saddened his loved ones, friends, and readers worldwide. His family, however, takes comfort in knowing he lived a long, diverse, and fruitful life.

Outside his home, in the bohemian Barranco neighborhood, a small group of admirers gathered silently upon hearing the news of his death, holding copies of his works.

His contributions to literature have been recognized by figures worldwide, including Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who praised his intellectual genius and enduring legacy. Other leaders, such as Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo and former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, also paid tribute to his work.

Vargas Llosa, born in Arequipa on March 28, 1936, had been in declining health since 2023 following a battle with COVID-19. A writer known for his insightful social commentary, his works like The Time of the Hero and Conversation in the Cathedral continue to be highly regarded.

Despite his popularity, Vargas Llosa's conservative views often drew criticism, especially from South American intellectuals. Nonetheless, his impact on literature remains undeniable, and he was inducted into the French Academy in 2021. His works have been translated into over thirty languages, and in 2016, he became the first foreign writer to enter the prestigious Pléiade collection during his lifetime.
