US secretary of state Marco Rubio arrived in Qatar on Tuesday, a week after an Israeli airstrike targeted the Qatari capital, Doha, in a move that has drawn widespread condemnation across the Arab world. The visit, coming directly after Rubio’s stop in Israel, underscores Washington's commitment to preserving Qatar’s key role in mediating efforts to end the ongoing Gaza conflict.
During his remarks to reporters en route to Doha, Rubio emphasized Qatar’s unique position as a mediator in the crisis, acknowledging the challenges posed by the recent attack. “It is clear that they must decide whether they want to continue this role after last week’s events,” Rubio stated. “But we want them to know that if there is any country in the world capable of helping to bring this to an end through negotiations, it is Qatar.”
