Marco Rubio visits Qatar amid tensions following Israeli strike on Doha

US secretary of state Marco Rubio arrived in Qatar on Tuesday, a week after an Israeli airstrike targeted the Qatari capital, Doha, in a move that has drawn widespread condemnation across the Arab world. The visit, coming directly after Rubio’s stop in Israel, underscores Washington's commitment to preserving Qatar’s key role in mediating efforts to end the ongoing Gaza conflict.

During his remarks to reporters en route to Doha, Rubio emphasized Qatar’s unique position as a mediator in the crisis, acknowledging the challenges posed by the recent attack. While he noted that the strike could lead Qatar to reconsider its role in negotiations, he reaffirmed the United States’ confidence in Doha’s capacity to lead the peace process.

“It is clear that they must decide whether they want to continue this role after last week’s events,” Rubio stated. “But we want them to know that if there is any country in the world capable of helping to bring this to an end through negotiations, it is Qatar.”

The Israeli attack, which marked an unprecedented escalation, has heightened regional tensions and raised questions about Qatar’s willingness to remain involved. Nevertheless, Rubio’s visit signals Washington’s determination to ensure that Qatar continues to serve as a critical intermediary in facilitating dialogue and potential resolutions.

The situation has further strained relations in an already volatile region, with Rubio’s diplomatic efforts reflecting the United States’ broader strategy to manage escalating hostilities while maintaining key alliances.
