Mapping Danger: Identifying Accident Hotspots on Moroccan Highways

In a revealing disclosure, Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, has shed light on the concerning reality of Morocco's national roads. Speaking at a session in Rabat, Baraka highlighted the presence of numerous accident-prone stretches, with his department identifying a staggering 340 black spots across the country's highway network.

Responding to an oral question in the Chamber of Advisors, the minister outlined a joint strategy formulated with the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA). This collaborative effort aims to accelerate the repair and rehabilitation of hazardous road sections, effectively reducing the number of accident-prone zones.

Baraka revealed that during the course of 2023, efforts have already been made to address 15 black spots, with the assurance that this endeavor will continue with unwavering urgency.

Among the noteworthy achievements cited by the minister is the rehabilitation of a stretch along National Road No. 9, connecting Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Additionally, the regional road No. 413, linking Meknes and Souk El Arbaa, has undergone extensive renovations spanning 88 kilometers.
