Man taken into custody in Gers after disappearance of 11-years-old girl
An investigation is underway in the department of Gers in southwestern France after the disappearance of an 11-years-old girl, prompting the detention of a 41-years-old man.
The child, identified as Lyhanna, was last seen on Friday around 3:05 p.m. near her school in the town of Fleurance. According to investigators, she was reportedly seen entering a vehicle linked to the suspect shortly before her disappearance.
The public prosecutor of Auch, Clémence Meyer, confirmed during a press briefing that the man was taken into custody on Saturday. Authorities have opened a formal investigation for the suspected kidnapping and unlawful detention of a minor under the age of 15.
During questioning, the suspect claimed he had dropped the girl off at a local swimming pool. However, investigators described his statements as inconsistent and lacking precision, leading them to question his version of events.
Officials also stated that there is no evidence suggesting the girl ran away voluntarily, as she had never previously been reported missing under similar circumstances.
Search operations are continuing in and around the Fleurance swimming pool area as police and emergency teams work to locate the missing child. The suspect’s custody has been extended as the investigation progresses.
