Magro hopes Lebanon will regain “full sovereignty” in 2026

As 2026 approaches, France’s ambassador to Lebanon, Hervé Magro, expressed hope that the country would regain its full sovereignty and return to a path of prosperity. His remarks were delivered in a video message shared on social media, in which he reaffirmed France’s long-standing support for Lebanon.

“The year ahead will be marked by key milestones that represent both challenges and promising opportunities,” Magro said, emphasizing France’s continued commitment to standing by Lebanon “in 2026 and beyond,” with what he described as a steady, reliable, and enduring engagement.

The ambassador welcomed the positive developments of 2025, including the election of President Joseph Aoun and the formation of a representative and action-oriented government. At the same time, he acknowledged the magnitude of the challenges facing the new executive after years of political, economic, and social crises.

Magro also referred to the concerns frequently raised by Lebanese citizens, particularly regarding security issues at both the national and regional levels. Nevertheless, he stressed that hope remains alive and can be renewed, citing the country’s recent capacity to project a positive image abroad during major international visits.

In addition, the French ambassador paid tribute to the unwavering dedication of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and reiterated France’s support for the Lebanese Armed Forces in their mission to safeguard national sovereignty and uphold the state’s monopoly over arms.
