Macron seeks to support de-escalation with Saudi crown prince amid Middle East tensions
French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed his commitment to easing tensions in the Middle East, following discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In a message shared after their exchange, Macron said both leaders agreed to remain in close contact to help promote de-escalation efforts, ensure freedom of navigation, and support the pursuit of a broader peace agreement in the region.
The statement comes as diplomatic talks between Iran and the United States begin in Islamabad, under Pakistani mediation, amid a fragile ceasefire. The French president emphasized the importance of maintaining and expanding the ceasefire, particularly in Lebanon, where violence has continued in recent days.
Macron also stressed the need to restore safe and uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies that has been affected by recent tensions.
In parallel, Macron held discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reiterating calls for respect for the ceasefire and the importance of achieving a lasting diplomatic solution. Ankara has been actively involved in regional mediation efforts alongside other countries.
Turkish officials highlighted their ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a broader ceasefire, including cooperation with regional partners. Erdoğan also warned against actions that could undermine stability in Lebanon, where recent hostilities have raised concerns over further escalation.
Despite a temporary truce between Iran and the United States, disagreements persist over whether Lebanon should be included in any broader peace arrangement. Meanwhile, Israel has continued its operations against Hezbollah, further complicating the situation.
Beyond the Middle East, Macron and Erdoğan also discussed the conflict in Ukraine, underlining the need for a just and durable peace aligned with international law and supported by strong security guarantees.
The renewed diplomatic engagement reflects growing international efforts to prevent further escalation and stabilize multiple conflict zones simultaneously.
