Macron proposes Paris G7 meeting with possible Russian participation

French President Emmanuel Macron has privately suggested to US President Donald Trump the organization of a G7 meeting in Paris this Thursday, with the possibility of inviting Russia to take part in side discussions, according to confirmation from Macron’s entourage.

The proposal, shared by Donald Trump on his social media platform and later authenticated by French presidential sources, outlines an informal diplomatic initiative following the World Economic Forum in Davos. Macron also suggested inviting representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, and Syria to parallel talks addressing several major international crises.

In his message, Macron emphasized alignment with Washington on Syria and expressed willingness to cooperate on Iran, while voicing concern over tensions surrounding Greenland. He reiterated France’s position that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in the Arctic region, remains non-negotiable.

French officials stressed that the message reflects consistency between France’s public stance and private diplomacy. Paris views its current presidency of the G7 as an opportunity to encourage dialogue and coordination among key international actors at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

If held, such a meeting would mark a rare moment of direct engagement involving Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, underscoring France’s intent to keep diplomatic channels open alongside its commitments to allies.
