Macron pledges national mobilization against antisemitism in France
French President Emmanuel Macron reassured the Jewish community on Saturday of the nation’s commitment to combating antisemitism, calling for a “firm punishment” of antisemitic acts. He announced that he has instructed Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin to issue a directive to prosecutors to enhance judicial responses to hate crimes and emerging forms of antisemitism.
“Against hatred, the Republic will always have the final word. The nation will always be mobilized,” Macron wrote on social media platform X. He acknowledged the fears and anxiety expressed by French Jews and emphasized the need for vigilance and immediate legal action.
Darmanin’s directive underscores the urgency of addressing antisemitic acts, particularly after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, which marked a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents in France. Macron stressed two guiding principles: absolute vigilance and prompt prosecution to ensure perpetrators are firmly punished.
The announcement comes as France prepares to officially recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations and coincides with the start of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Macron seeks to rebuild trust with France’s Jewish community, which has expressed growing discontent over the past two years.
