Macron hails “Decisive Opportunity” after Hamas accepts Trump’s peace plan

French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed Hamas’s acceptance of Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan, describing it as a “decisive opportunity” to end two years of conflict in Gaza. Speaking from Copenhagen during the European Political Community summit, Macron expressed optimism that a ceasefire and the release of all hostages could be achieved soon.

“The liberation of all hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza are within reach,” Macron said on X (formerly Twitter). “The commitment made by Hamas must be implemented without delay. France will play its full part in this process.”

The announcement by Hamas, which expressed willingness to release all hostages held in Gaza, has sparked a wave of international reactions. Qatar, a key mediator, praised Hamas’s approval, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “encouraged” and urged all sides to seize this chance to end the “tragic conflict.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also called Hamas’s response “encouraging,” saying that “peace in Gaza is finally within reach.”

Donald Trump’s plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages within 72 hours, and the disarmament of Hamas. However, Hamas officials described the proposal as “vague and ambiguous,” calling for further negotiations.

In response, Trump urged Israel to “immediately stop the bombings” in Gaza to allow for the safe evacuation of hostages, claiming that “Hamas is ready for lasting peace.”
