Macron endorses repeal of France’s colonial slavery laws

Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for repealing historical French colonial laws that once regulated slavery in overseas territories, describing their continued legal existence as incompatible with the principles of the French Republic.

Speaking during a ceremony at the Élysée Palace commemorating 25 years since France officially recognized slavery and the slave trade as crimes against humanity, Macron called for a more honest examination of the country’s colonial history. He emphasized that France must continue confronting the consequences of slavery while promoting historical understanding and social dialogue.

At the center of the debate is the “Code Noir,” a set of royal decrees introduced during the 17th and 18th centuries to govern slavery in French colonies. Although slavery was abolished long ago, the texts were never formally removed from French law, leading critics and historians to demand their official repeal.

Macron supported a parliamentary initiative seeking to revoke the decrees, arguing that symbols linked to oppression and colonial domination have no place within a modern democratic society. He acknowledged the suffering endured by enslaved populations and stated that the damage caused by slavery could never be entirely repaired.

The French president also addressed the sensitive topic of reparations. While recognizing growing calls from activists and political groups for measures addressing the legacy of slavery and discrimination, he warned against unrealistic expectations and stressed the need for practical and balanced solutions.

As part of France’s effort to deepen historical research, Macron announced a joint initiative with Ghana aimed at studying the long-term social, economic and cultural consequences of slavery. The project is expected to provide recommendations for policymakers and contribute to educational and historical awareness programs.

Macron’s comments are being viewed as an important moment in France’s ongoing debate over colonial history, racism and national identity. Analysts believe the discussion could influence future political initiatives concerning equality, memory and relations between France and former colonies.
