Luis de la Fuente extends Spain contract through 2032

The Spanish Football Federation has extended Luis de la Fuente’s contract as head coach of the national team until 2032, rewarding the manager for a highly successful period that has seen Spain return to the top of international football.

The 65-year-old coach will remain in charge through the 2028 and 2032 European Championships as well as the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

De la Fuente took over the national team in late 2022 following the departure of Luis Enrique. Since then, he has overseen a remarkable run of results, guiding Spain to the UEFA Nations League title in 2023 and the European Championship crown in 2024 before adding another World Cup triumph this summer.

His success with the senior team has also strengthened a career built over more than a decade within the Spanish federation. De la Fuente previously worked with several youth sides and led Spain to the European Under-21 Championship title in 2019.

Spanish federation president Rafael Louzán said the coach had earned the opportunity to remain in charge for the long term, highlighting his achievements and lengthy service within Spanish football.

The contract extension gives De la Fuente the opportunity to build on Spain’s current generation and pursue further international honours. The federation will also be looking toward the 2030 World Cup on home soil, an event expected to be a major milestone for Spanish football.

Spain’s next competitive challenges will provide an early test of the team following its latest international triumph. The national side is scheduled to face England on September 26 before hosting Croatia three days later in Seville in the Nations League. Spain will then meet the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3 and face Croatia again three days afterward.
