Long Island man critically injured after necklace pulls him into MRI machine

A Long Island man suffered critical injuries on Wednesday after being pulled into an active MRI machine by the metallic chain necklace he was wearing.

Incident details

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, according to Nassau County police. The 61-year-old man reportedly entered the MRI suite without authorization while a scan was in progress.

Police stated that the man was wearing a "large metallic chain around his neck," which was drawn into the powerful magnetic field of the machine, causing a severe medical episode.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a hospital and remained in critical condition on Thursday. Authorities are investigating how he was able to access the room while the MRI machine was operational.

Dangers of MRI machines

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machines use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures. However, metallic objects are strictly prohibited near these machines, as the magnetic field can turn metal into dangerous projectiles.

According to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, "The magnetic field extends beyond the machine and exerts very powerful forces on objects of iron, some steels, and other magnetizable materials; it is strong enough to fling a wheelchair across the room."

The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released.
