Kotak Mahindra Bank reports profit beat driven by strong loan growth
Kotak Mahindra Bank reported stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, supported by solid loan expansion and lower provisions for bad debts, highlighting continued momentum in India’s private banking sector.
The Mumbai-based lender posted a 13% rise in standalone net profit for the quarter ending March 31, reaching 40.27 billion rupees. The result exceeded market expectations of around 37.37 billion rupees, according to data compiled from financial analysts.
The bank’s performance was driven by sustained demand for credit in both retail and corporate segments. Net advances grew by 16% compared to the previous year, while total deposits increased by 15%, reflecting healthy customer inflows and lending activity.
India’s credit growth has strengthened in recent months, supported by easing inflation, tax adjustments, and improving household consumption. Businesses have also increased borrowing as economic conditions stabilize.
Net interest income rose by 8%, reaching 78.76 billion rupees, benefiting from a stable lending environment. At the same time, provisions for potential loan losses declined significantly, indicating improved asset quality and lower risk expectations.
Other major Indian lenders have also reported strong results, suggesting a broad-based recovery in the banking sector. However, analysts continue to monitor global economic conditions and interest rate trends that could affect future lending margins.
Overall, Kotak Mahindra Bank’s results reflect resilience in India’s financial system, with strong credit demand playing a key role in sustaining profitability across the sector.
