Judge halts deployment of National Guard in Chicago ordered by Trump

A federal judge on Thursday suspended the deployment of the National Guard to Chicago and its surrounding area, a move ordered earlier by President Donald Trump. The judge ruled that the situation did not justify the alleged risk of “rebellion” invoked by the federal government.

“I found no credible evidence of a rebellion threat in the state of Illinois,” declared Judge April Perry, according to U.S. media, after hearing arguments from both sides.

The decision came in response to a complaint filed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the city of Chicago, both led by Democrats. Judge Perry described the claims made by the Department of Homeland Security as “unreliable” and warned that deploying soldiers “would only add fuel to the fire the government itself lit.”

Governor Pritzker reacted on X (formerly Twitter): “Donald Trump is not a king, and his administration is not above the law. The National Guard has no place in the streets of an American city like Chicago.”

Earlier the same day, another federal judge temporarily restricted the use of force by Homeland Security agents, including anti-riot equipment, during protests in the Chicago area. The ruling cited recent incidents involving journalists, protesters, and religious figures who posed no immediate threat to law enforcement.
