Jeff Bezos’s Rocket Blasts into Space with All-Woman Crew Including Katy Perry
Pop sensation Katy Perry joined an all-woman crew on a historic spaceflight aboard one of Jeff Bezos’s rockets. The mission, which took off from western Texas, saw Perry and five other women, including Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, ascend over 60 miles (100 kilometers) into space. The fully automated Blue Origin spacecraft launched vertically before the crew capsule detached mid-flight and returned to Earth under parachutes and a retro rocket.
This flight marks the first all-female space crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s groundbreaking solo mission in 1963. It was Blue Origin’s 11th crewed sub-orbital mission, providing a glimpse of commercial space tourism. The flight took the passengers beyond the Karman line, the recognized boundary of space, where they briefly experienced zero gravity before descending.
Katy Perry, in a statement to Elle magazine, said her journey was for her daughter Daisy, aiming to inspire her to dream without limits. She was amazed to learn that her capsule was nicknamed “Tortoise,” a reference to a childhood nickname, reinforcing the sense of connection and purpose she felt.
The other passengers included TV host Gayle King, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, and Amanda Nguyen, a sexual violence advocate. This launch continues Blue Origin’s push to make space tourism a reality, as it competes with Virgin Galactic and plans to challenge SpaceX with orbital tourism in the future.
