Italy: Fugitive member of 'Ndrangheta mafia arrested in Switzerland
Swiss authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of a fugitive linked to the powerful Calabrian mafia, the 'Ndrangheta. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended on January 23 in Wetzikon, about 30 kilometers north of Zurich.
The arrest was carried out based on an Italian arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Catanzaro, Calabrian region, where the fugitive has been sought since January 2022. The suspect is currently detained in Switzerland pending extradition. Italy has until February 10, 2026, to submit a formal extradition request, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ).
Swiss press reports indicate that the individual was also linked to an international drug trafficking investigation in May 2022. The 'Ndrangheta is considered the most powerful and wealthiest Italian mafia, largely due to its control of cocaine trafficking across Europe.
The arrest highlights ongoing international cooperation between Italy and Switzerland in combating organized crime, particularly transnational mafias that operate across multiple countries.
