Italy evacuates around 3,500 people as wildfire spreads in Tuscany

Authorities in Tuscany have evacuated approximately 3,500 residents as a fast-moving wildfire continues to spread across wooded areas in central Italy. The fire has been burning for more than 24 hours, forcing emergency services into large-scale action.

Local officials confirmed that the evacuation mainly concerns communities in mountainous areas between the cities of Lucca and Pisa.

Fire spreads across hundreds of hectares

The wildfire has already destroyed more than 800 hectares of forest and natural land. Strong winds have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, pushing the fire closer to populated areas and increasing evacuation needs.

Authorities warned that changing weather conditions could further complicate firefighting efforts in the coming hours.

Emergency response mobilized

Italian emergency services have deployed significant resources to contain the blaze. Firefighters are supported by aircraft, including water-bombing planes and helicopters, working continuously to slow the fire’s advance.

Military and police units have also joined evacuation operations, helping residents move to safer areas and ensuring public safety.

Temporary shelters have been set up, including sports halls that are currently housing over 100 displaced residents.

Wildfires and climate concerns

Wildfires are not uncommon in Italy, but they are increasingly occurring outside the traditional summer season. Experts link this shift to rising temperatures and prolonged dry periods associated with climate change.

The current situation in Tuscany reflects broader environmental challenges facing Mediterranean countries, where hotter and drier conditions are increasing the risk of large-scale fires.
