Italian hiker’s fatal fall on Mount Toubkal highlights risks of high altitude trekking

A 66-year-old Italian hiker has died during a trekking expedition in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains after suffering a fatal fall while descending Mount Toubkal with his son. The incident has renewed attention on the risks associated with high altitude hiking, even for experienced mountaineers taking part in organized solidarity programs.

Fatal accident during solidarity trek

Italian media reported that the victim, identified as Alberto Silvestro, was originally from Saluzzo and living in Fossano in northern Italy. He was participating with his son Andrea in a solidarity trekking initiative on Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 meters and a popular destination for international climbers near Marrakech.

The accident occurred on November 19 during a program organized by the association CIP – Cinema Inclusione Partecipazione under the initiative “Passi di solidarietà” or “Steps of solidarity,” which promotes social inclusion and community engagement through shared hiking experiences. According to initial accounts, Silvestro slipped on a snowy section of the descent route and sustained severe head injuries that proved fatal despite rapid emergency intervention.

Experienced mountaineer remembered for community work

Silvestro was known as an experienced trekker who had recently retired from work as a representative for professional hairdressing products. Friends and colleagues said he regularly took part in treks in Italy and abroad and often shared his passion for the mountains with his son, with whom he had completed several challenging routes over the years.

Andrea Silvestro, who witnessed the fall, is an educator active in social and civic initiatives in Fossano and the surrounding Saluzzo area in Italy’s Piedmont region. He serves as vice president of the local chapter of ANPI, the National Association of Italian Partisans, an organization that his father frequently supported through volunteer work and participation in community events.

Tributes from ANPI and local associations

In a public message, ANPI Fossano expressed deep sorrow at Silvestro’s passing and thanked him for his longstanding commitment and availability to ANPI and other local organizations. The statement emphasized his contribution to civic life and extended condolences to his family, with particular mention of his son Andrea.

Local groups and associations described Silvestro as a discreet yet generous figure who consistently backed solidarity and cultural projects without seeking public recognition. Community members recalled his habit of offering time, presence and financial support to initiatives aimed at social inclusion, education and cultural engagement in the Fossano and Saluzzo areas.

Personal memories from fellow hikers

Mountaineering companions have been sharing recollections of Silvestro’s behavior on previous expeditions, underlining his experience and sense of responsibility in the mountains. One fellow hiker, quoted in Italian media, recounted a three-day trek in Sant’Anna di Vinadio in the Italian Alps, describing how Silvestro encouraged the group to continue when weather conditions looked uncertain, but ultimately chose to stay with participants facing difficulties rather than pursue a longer route.

Associations such as Makala, with which Silvestro collaborated, paid tribute to him as a “fantastic person” always willing to support not only their organization but many others in the region. Messages emphasized his quiet leadership, reliability and constant readiness to assist, whether on the mountain trails or in community projects.

Emergency response and repatriation

Rescue services responded quickly after Silvestro’s fall on the Toubkal trail, but medical teams were unable to save his life due to the severity of the head injuries sustained in the incident. The trekking group was in the midst of the solidarity expedition when the accident occurred, turning a program focused on inclusion and support into a tragedy that deeply affected participants and organizers alike.

Funeral arrangements remain on hold as authorities coordinate procedures to repatriate Silvestro’s body to Italy. The news has resonated strongly in Fossano, where he lived, and in his hometown of Saluzzo, with both communities expressing shock and mourning through local media, civic organizations and social networks.

Outpouring of condolences and final message

Social media channels linked to local associations and residents in Fossano and Saluzzo have been filled with messages of sympathy and remembrance from people who knew Silvestro personally or through his volunteer activities. Many posts highlighted his generosity, calm demeanor and willingness to help others, whether in everyday community life or on demanding trekking routes.

His son Andrea shared a photograph of the pair at the summit of Mount Toubkal taken hours before the accident, accompanied by a message noting that they had once again reached the top and that “the most beautiful one we still have to climb.” The phrase has been widely shared as a poignant reflection of the duo’s shared passion for the mountains and as a tribute to a final successful ascent before the fatal descent.

Risks of high altitude trekking on Mount Toubkal

The incident has drawn renewed attention to safety conditions on Mount Toubkal and similar high altitude routes, which attract thousands of trekkers each year. At 4,167 meters, the peak is considered accessible to fit hikers but remains exposed to sudden weather changes, icy surfaces and steep sections where a misstep can have serious consequences.

Specialists and experienced hikers note that even seasoned mountaineers like Silvestro, with years of practice on demanding trails in several countries, face significant risks in high mountain environments. The accident underscores the importance of cautious route planning, appropriate equipment for snow and ice conditions and strict adherence to safety protocols, particularly on descent, when fatigue can heighten vulnerability to falls.
