Israeli embassy staff killed outside Washington Jewish Museum
Two staff members from the Israeli Embassy in the United States were fatally shot near the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., on the evening of Wednesday, May 21, according to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Noem described the incident as a "senseless" act of violence and confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Local media reported that a man was seen loitering near the museum before opening fire, striking both a male and female embassy employee. Witnesses say the suspect shouted “Free Palestine” during his arrest.
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, condemned the attack as a “distorted act of antisemitic terrorism,” stressing that targeting diplomats and the Jewish community constitutes a serious violation. He expressed confidence that U.S. authorities would take decisive action against those responsible and affirmed Israel’s commitment to protecting its citizens and diplomats worldwide.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the killings as "horrific," attributing the violence to antisemitism. On Truth Social, he urged an end to such acts, emphasizing that hatred and extremism have no place in the United States.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, vowing that those behind the attack would face justice. One suspect was reportedly apprehended shortly after the shooting.
