Israeli Drone Attack Escalates Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

Thursday 12 December 2024 - 07:39

An Israeli drone attack targeting Palestinian security personnel escorting a humanitarian aid convoy in the Gaza Strip has left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured. Reports from medics and local residents indicate that over 30 people sustained injuries, with many in critical condition, following the attack on Thursday in southern Gaza. The security guards were ensuring the safety of an aid shipment amid the ongoing conflict.

Video footage from Gaza shows the devastating aftermath, with bodies of the targeted security personnel at a morgue near Khan Younis. This incident adds to a series of attacks on aid workers and convoys attempting to alleviate the humanitarian crisis gripping Gaza. The region is experiencing severe food shortages and escalating fears of famine, especially in the north, which remains under siege and intense military operations.

Earlier this week, an attack in Rafah claimed 10 lives as residents queued for flour. In another incident, six individuals, including children, were killed during an assault on a residential building in Gaza City. Meanwhile, the bombing of a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp raised the death toll to 13.

The Gaza Ministry of Health has reported over 44,800 fatalities and 106,000 injuries since the conflict escalated in October 2023. Despite the catastrophic conditions, aid delivery remains fraught with obstacles. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) had temporarily paused aid shipments in December due to safety concerns, restricted access, and targeting of local police safeguarding the routes.

UNRWA's chief has called for Israel to ensure the unimpeded flow of aid to Gaza, emphasizing the necessity of safe humanitarian access. A recent joint UN aid convoy managed to deliver food supplies to 200,000 people in southern and central Gaza, demonstrating the potential of coordinated efforts. However, continued political commitment is crucial to sustaining these operations.

Speaking from New York after visiting Gaza, a senior UN official described the devastation as unprecedented. The prolonged blockade has left Gaza without access to fresh produce for over a month, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Efforts must intensify to facilitate safe and consistent aid delivery, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations receive the help they desperately need.
