Israeli army recovers bodies of three hostages from Gaza
Israeli military forces have recovered the bodies of three hostages who were taken during the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the operation on Sunday. The victims were identified as civilians Ofra Keidar and Yonatan Samerano, along with soldier Shay Levinson. According to the military, all three were killed on the day of their abduction.
This recovery brings the number of hostages still held in Gaza down to 50, with only around 20 believed to be alive. Notably, the kidnapping of 21-year-old Samerano was captured on CCTV and allegedly carried out by a man later linked to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
The Hamas-led assault resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, based on Israeli government data. In response, Israel launched a sustained military campaign in Gaza that, according to local health authorities, has claimed the lives of over 55,000 Palestinians. The conflict has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, devastated infrastructure, and deepened a severe humanitarian crisis.
