Israel warns of decisive military response against Hezbollah despite fragile Lebanon ceasefire
Israel has signaled its readiness to launch a swift military response against Hezbollah if the current ceasefire along the Lebanese border collapses, underscoring the fragile security situation despite recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
The warning was delivered by Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir during a visit to Israeli troops operating near Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, an area that has become strategically significant in recent months.
Israeli military stresses operational readiness
Addressing soldiers deployed near the border, Zamir said the Israeli military would continue to respond firmly to any security threats originating from Lebanese territory.
He stated that Israeli forces remain prepared to transition rapidly to offensive operations should the existing truce be violated, emphasizing that the protection of Israeli civilians and military personnel remains the country's top priority.
The military also reiterated its expectation that the Lebanese Armed Forces enforce their commitments under existing security arrangements by preventing Hezbollah's military activities in southern Lebanon.
Beaufort Castle remains a strategic location
Israeli officials said troops operating around Beaufort Castle had previously uncovered an underground tunnel network allegedly linked to Hezbollah beneath the historic fortress.
The medieval site, located a few kilometers north of the Israeli border, has long held military significance. It served as an Israeli military position during Israel's presence in southern Lebanon before the withdrawal in 2000 and has once again become a focal point in the latest confrontation.
Ceasefire remains fragile
Hostilities resumed in early March after Hezbollah launched attacks toward Israel in support of Iran during a broader regional escalation. Israel responded with an extensive air campaign and ground operations in southern Lebanon.
Subsequent diplomatic efforts led to a ceasefire that entered into force in late June, followed by a broader framework agreement intended to lay the foundations for a more durable peace between Israel and Lebanon.
Despite those agreements, Israeli forces have maintained a military presence in parts of southern Lebanon and continue to carry out targeted operations against what they describe as security threats.
Israeli military leaders maintain that any attack against their forces or civilians will trigger an immediate response, highlighting the continuing volatility along one of the Middle East's most sensitive frontiers.
