Iran rejects U.S. allegations of plot to kill Israeli ambassador in Mexico

Iran firmly denied on Monday the accusations made by the United States, which claimed that Tehran had planned to assassinate Israel’s ambassador in Mexico. Iranian officials described the allegations as “ridiculous and baseless,” insisting they were part of a political campaign aimed at damaging Tehran’s relations with other nations.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said during a press conference that the accusations sought “to undermine Iran’s friendly relations with other countries.” He dismissed Washington’s claims as “absurd propaganda.”

Last Friday, a U.S. official alleged that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its elite Quds Force had begun organizing the operation in late 2024. According to the same source, the plot was foiled earlier this year and posed no immediate threat.

Israel later expressed gratitude to Mexican authorities “for helping to disrupt a terrorist network directed by Iran.” However, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry stated it had “received no official information” on the matter, while Iran’s embassy in Mexico City labeled the accusation “a complete fabrication.”

U.S. intelligence reports claimed that the alleged plan involved recruiting operatives through Iran’s embassy in Venezuela, where President Nicolás Maduro maintains close ties with Tehran.

The latest diplomatic tensions come only months after a 12-day military confrontation between Iran and Israel in June. The conflict ended with a fragile ceasefire on June 24, following unprecedented airstrikes on Iranian targets.
