Iran halts attacks on Israel after Trump calls for ceasefire

Direct missile exchanges between Iran and Israel marked the most serious escalation between the two countries in two months, as both sides launched strikes for the first time since the April 8 ceasefire. The confrontation began when Iran fired multiple waves of ballistic missiles toward northern Israel, targeting two Israeli air bases, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Israeli military officials reported that nearly 30 ballistic missiles were launched from Iranian territory and said all were intercepted without causing casualties.

Iran described the missile launches as retaliation for recent Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The attacks signaled a sharp rise in regional tensions and raised concerns that the fragile truce could collapse. Iranian officials initially warned that the operation could develop into a sustained campaign lasting several days.

Israel responded with extensive strikes against military targets across central and western Iran. Explosions were reported in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan as Israeli aircraft targeted air defense systems and weapons facilities deep inside Iranian territory. Israeli forces also struck a petrochemical facility in Mahshahr in Khuzestan province, expanding the scope of the military response beyond previous operations.

Amid the escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urged both countries to stop their attacks immediately and called for a rapid ceasefire. He also reportedly communicated directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, encouraging restraint and expressing confidence that diplomatic efforts could still produce an agreement. Trump later stated that the latest military exchanges would not derail ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Within hours of Trump’s intervention, Iranian authorities announced the suspension of military operations against Israel. Iranian state media confirmed the decision, while officials maintained that Tehran reserved the right to respond to any future attacks. The announcement represented a significant reversal after earlier warnings of continued strikes and helped ease immediate fears of a broader regional conflict.

Despite the pause in hostilities, neither side has formally abandoned the April 8 ceasefire framework. The United States continues to maintain naval pressure on Iran while negotiations remain underway. Regional tensions nevertheless remain high, with both governments signaling that future military action remains possible if provocations occur.
