Iran arrests reformist spokesperson amid crackdown on political figures
Iranian authorities have arrested Javad Emam, the spokesperson for the country’s main reformist coalition, the Reformist Front, according to local media reports on Monday. Emam, a former campaign official for opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi in 2009, was taken from his home in the early hours of Sunday by agents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The arrest follows similar actions against three other prominent reformist figures, including Azar Mansouri, head of the Reformist Front since 2023 and a former advisor to ex-President Mohammad Khatami, as well as former parliamentarian Ebrahim Asgharzadeh and ex-diplomat Mohsen Aminzadeh. These detentions come amid ongoing investigations into political actors accused of supporting foreign adversaries, namely the United States and Israel.
The reformist camp had largely backed President Massoud Pezeshkian during the 2024 presidential election. The recent arrests are part of a broader crackdown that also targets individuals who have publicly criticized the government, including filmmakers and human rights advocates.
