Investigation underway after 25-year-old man dies following Nitrous Oxide use in France

French authorities have opened an investigation after a 25-year-old man died following a medical emergency in the city of Bobigny, with investigators examining whether heavy consumption of nitrous oxide may have contributed to the incident.

Emergency responders were called to the scene on Sunday after the man collapsed in a public area. Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.

According to preliminary findings, the victim had reportedly consumed a large quantity of nitrous oxide—commonly known as "laughing gas"—before losing consciousness. However, officials have stressed that no direct causal relationship between the substance and the fatal outcome has been established at this stage.

A forensic autopsy has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death and to clarify whether the use of nitrous oxide played a role in the medical emergency. Toxicological analyses are also expected to form part of the investigation.

The Bobigny criminal investigation service has been tasked with establishing the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nitrous oxide is widely used in medical and industrial settings, but it has also become a recreational substance in several European countries. Health authorities have repeatedly warned that excessive or repeated inhalation can pose serious health risks, including oxygen deprivation, neurological damage, loss of consciousness, and, in some cases, severe cardiovascular or respiratory complications.

The case has renewed attention on the dangers associated with the recreational misuse of nitrous oxide, particularly among young adults. Investigators are awaiting the results of the medical examinations before drawing any conclusions regarding the cause of death.
