Intense Clashes Erupt in Khiam as Strategic Town Becomes Focal Point of Conflict
The border town of Khiam in southern Lebanon has become a hotspot for intense clashes between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army. The ongoing battle for control of this strategic location has escalated over the past several days, as reported by the National News Agency (ANI) of Lebanon on Saturday.
Israeli forces have been targeting Khiam in a concentrated effort to secure what they see as a "strategic gateway" for advancing deeper into southern Lebanon. Overnight assaults with a wide range of weaponry continued until Saturday morning, according to ANI.
A Renewed Offensive
This development follows nearly two months of intensified Israeli military operations against Hezbollah. The offensive includes ground incursions and relentless airstrikes on Hezbollah strongholds, which began on September 23. The conflict arose as Hezbollah escalated its attacks on northern Israel in support of Hamas.
Israeli tanks have been stationed east of Khiam, about six kilometers from the border, for over three weeks. Recent reports suggest an effort to encircle the town, with heavy use of air and ground forces to destroy key infrastructure, including homes and buildings.
Retaliation and Resistance
In response, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for at least 20 attacks on Israeli soldiers in Khiam over the last 48 hours. This marks a continuation of its resistance, reminiscent of its tactics during the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended in 2000 after 22 years.
Israeli incursions into multiple border villages have resulted in the destruction of buildings and purported Hezbollah tunnels before the troops retreated. The Israeli army maintains that these actions aim to push Hezbollah away from the southern border and facilitate the return of roughly 60,000 displaced northern Israeli residents.
Strategic Importance
Khiam holds significant strategic value for both sides. For Israel, capturing the town could enable a quicker ground advance in southern Lebanon. For Hezbollah, its defense symbolizes resistance against Israeli territorial ambitions.
In addition to Khiam, ANI reported fierce fighting near Bayyada, a coastal village approximately seven kilometers from the border. Bayyada's strategic position adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict.
A Turbulent History
Khiam has historical significance as a site of resistance against Israeli forces. During the occupation, it housed a prison managed by the South Lebanon Army, an Israeli-aligned militia. Today, the town is once again a symbol of the struggle for control in this volatile region.
As the fighting rages on, the humanitarian toll on the region grows, with displaced populations and widespread destruction underscoring the devastating impact of the ongoing hostilities. The international community continues to watch closely as the conflict evolves.
