Indonesia and Malaysia condemn Israel over UNRWA headquarters demolition
Indonesia and Malaysia have strongly criticized Israel for demolishing structures at the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) headquarters in East Jerusalem. Both countries labeled the action a serious breach of international law and called for accountability.
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry described the demolition as a violation of UNRWA’s privileges and immunities, citing an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice issued last October. The ICJ affirmed Israel’s duty to respect the presence of UN organizations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, emphasizing the humanitarian importance of UNRWA and the legal protections afforded to its personnel and facilities.
Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry also condemned Israel’s actions, urging the international community to hold Israel responsible for ongoing violations of the UN Charter, the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities, and relevant UN resolutions. Officials stressed that impunity for such acts must end.
The UNRWA leadership reported that Israeli forces entered the agency’s East Jerusalem compound and began demolitions, following recent Israeli legislation limiting electricity and water supplies to UNRWA facilities. Similar restrictions and bans have been imposed in the past, citing security concerns, though UNRWA maintains its neutrality in all operations.
