India expands biofuel strategy with the launch of E85 gasoline
India has taken another step in its energy transition by introducing gasoline blended with 85% ethanol, commonly known as E85. The new fuel is expected to be offered at a lower price than conventional gasoline blends, reflecting the country's broader efforts to promote cleaner energy sources and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
The launch comes as Indian authorities continue to strengthen policies aimed at increasing the use of biofuels in the transportation sector. E85 is designed specifically for flex-fuel vehicles, which are capable of operating with high concentrations of ethanol while maintaining engine performance and efficiency.
Several major automobile manufacturers have already introduced flex-fuel models in the Indian market, supporting the government's strategy to encourage wider adoption of alternative fuels. Industry experts believe that the availability of compatible vehicles will play a key role in the success of the new fuel program.
Beyond its economic benefits, the initiative is expected to contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality in urban areas. Ethanol is generally considered a renewable fuel because it is produced from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane and other biomass resources.
India, one of the world's largest consumers of energy, has been actively pursuing measures to diversify its fuel mix. The country previously achieved a significant increase in ethanol blending rates and is now seeking to expand the use of higher ethanol concentrations across its transportation network.
Government officials argue that greater use of domestically produced ethanol can help strengthen energy security by reducing exposure to fluctuations in global oil markets. At the same time, the policy may create new opportunities for farmers and the agricultural sector through increased demand for biofuel feedstocks.
As India accelerates its transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, the rollout of E85 fuel represents an important milestone in the country's long-term strategy to balance economic growth, environmental protection, and energy independence.
