During his ceremonial welcome of Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump delivered to the Russian leader what he described as a “message of peace” written by First Lady Melania Trump, according to Fox News.
The letter, highlighted by the conservative network and later reposted by Melania on her X account, did not explicitly mention Ukraine but urged the Kremlin to “make children laugh again” and “protect their innocence.” In the note, the First Lady appealed to Putin to serve not only Russia but “all of humanity.”
The gesture came after a high-profile summit in Anchorage, where Trump failed to secure a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. Instead, he signaled a shift in his stance, dropping his previous demand for an immediate truce and now calling for a broader “peace agreement” to end the war.
Trump’s change of tone contrasts sharply with his earlier threats in July, when he warned Moscow of “very serious consequences” if hostilities continued. At the time, he also acknowledged that his wife had influenced his perception of Putin, recounting that she often reminded him of the human toll of the conflict.
While the summit produced no tangible results, the unusual role played by the First Lady’s letter has added a symbolic dimension to ongoing discussions about peace in Ukraine.
