Imam killed inside Casablanca mosque as police detain suspect

Authorities in Morocco are investigating a fatal assault that took place inside a mosque in Casablanca, where a 57-year-old imam died after being attacked on Sunday, June 28, 2026. The incident has shocked local residents and raised concerns about safety within places of worship.

According to initial information released by investigators, the victim was attacked while inside the mosque located in the Tacharouk district. Emergency services and police units were quickly deployed following the alert, but the imam succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident and taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that judicial proceedings have been initiated under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office, as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the assault and the possible motive behind it.

Preliminary findings reported by officials suggest that the suspect may be suffering from mental health issues, although this assessment has not yet been confirmed through formal psychiatric evaluation. Investigators have stressed that all hypotheses remain open as the inquiry continues.

The victim’s body has been transferred to the morgue for autopsy in accordance with legal procedures. Officials have not released further details regarding the identity of the suspect or the precise sequence of events leading to the attack.

The case has prompted widespread reaction locally, particularly given the location of the incident inside a religious institution, where such acts remain extremely rare. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
