Hospital fire in Germany kills two and injures 34 in Ludwigslust

At least two people have died and 34 others were injured after a fire broke out at a hospital in Ludwigslust, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, early Thursday morning, according to local police.

Emergency services responded to the incident shortly after dawn, bringing the blaze under control and relocating patients to safe areas within the hospital complex.

Fire Breaks Out in Patient Room

Authorities said the fire occurred at Helene-von-Bülow Hospital, where the flames were ultimately contained to a limited section of the facility.

According to German broadcaster NDR, the blaze is believed to have started in a patient's room before spreading to the roof of the hospital's radiology department. Firefighters later succeeded in extinguishing the fire, and no active flames remained visible.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Patients Moved to Safe Areas

Hospital staff and emergency responders evacuated patients from the affected section of the building to secure areas elsewhere inside the medical complex, where they continued receiving treatment.

Officials indicated that the fire did not spread throughout the hospital, helping to limit further casualties despite the seriousness of the incident.

Large Emergency Response

Firefighters, ambulance crews and police officers were dispatched to the hospital from around 4:20 a.m., launching a large-scale emergency operation to contain the blaze and assist patients and staff.

Authorities have confirmed two fatalities and 34 injuries, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Further updates are expected as investigators assess the origin of the blaze and the extent of the damage to the hospital.
