Haitian security forces step up operations against gangs

Haitian security forces have intensified their operations against criminal gangs in Port-au-Prince, as authorities seek to restore order in areas long affected by armed violence. Police operations are now being conducted daily in parts of the capital that have been largely controlled by gangs in recent years.

According to police officials, targeted actions have recently weakened several criminal groups, including those led by some of the country’s most notorious gang figures. These operations form part of a broader strategy aimed at regaining territorial control and reducing the influence of armed coalitions operating in urban neighborhoods.

The offensive is being carried out with the support of a specialized anti-gang force that has taken over from the former multinational mission. Private security assistance has also been mobilized to reinforce patrols and secure sensitive zones. Authorities report an increase in coordinated operations since late December, describing them as a turning point in efforts to re-establish public order.

Haiti has faced persistent insecurity for years, but the situation worsened significantly in 2024 amid political instability and the absence of elected institutions. The country has not held national elections since 2016 and is currently governed by transitional authorities, who have announced plans to organize legislative and presidential elections in 2026.

The humanitarian impact of the violence remains severe. Large numbers of residents have been forced to flee their homes, while food insecurity continues to affect millions of people. International organizations and regional partners are closely monitoring the situation as Haiti attempts to stabilize its security environment.
