Grimes announces psy opera album featuring lyrics co written by ai
Grimes has revealed details of her upcoming album Psy Opera, marking her return to music after several years away from the industry. The project follows her 2020 release Miss Anthropocene and introduces a rare collaboration with artificial intelligence, though the artist insists the technology played only a limited role in the creative process.
In a recent conversation with Nnedi Okorafor, Grimes said she had stepped back from music entirely for a period, intending to focus on family life. She described an inability to listen to music without distress, which led her to experiment first with poetry and rap before gradually returning to pop songwriting. The transition shaped the direction of the new album, moving away from purely experimental spoken word toward a more structured format.
Grimes addressed widespread assumptions about her use of generative AI, stating that she largely avoided it in production. The exception is a track titled “DeepSeek,” which references the open source AI model DeepSeek. She used the system to help write lyrics for the song, highlighting a specific line that resonated with her emotionally. The process, she said, reflected a deeper struggle tied to thought, creativity, and the idea of consciousness.
Although AI tools played a minimal technical role, the theme dominates the album’s narrative. Grimes described artificial intelligence as a transformative force with far reaching implications, comparing its impact to major shifts in belief systems throughout history. At the same time, she expressed cautious optimism about its potential to advance fields such as medicine and physics, and suggested that advanced AI systems could develop forms of awareness.
Beyond the album, Grimes is expanding her work around AI and creativity. She is developing a documentary titled First Contact focused on machine consciousness and preparing a white paper on the economics of AI generated art. These projects follow her earlier decision to allow fans to replicate her voice using AI in exchange for shared revenue, a move that drew attention across the music industry.
The naming of a track after DeepSeek and its credit as a co writer signals a notable moment in the relationship between mainstream artists and open source AI. While no release date has been confirmed for Psy Opera, the project has already generated interest for its blend of personal narrative, technological themes, and selective use of emerging tools.
