Green economy project empowers Moroccan youth through sustainable opportunities

The GREEN project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing youth employability in Morocco's green economy, officially concluded its two-year run on June 12. Spearheaded by EFE-Maroc in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the program exceeded expectations, training over 2,100 young people—50% of whom were women—and equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in sustainable industries.

A mission to empower youth in the green economy

Launched in February 2023, the project, formally titled "Generating Renewed Hope for Moroccan Youth through Training and Job Placements in the Green Economy," sought to address employment challenges faced by vulnerable communities. Initially targeting 2,000 participants, the initiative surpassed its goal, reaching individuals from diverse regions such as Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, the Oriental, Casablanca-Settat, Souss-Massa, and Draa-Tafilalet.

The program provided comprehensive training in green entrepreneurship, sustainable employment, digital literacy, language skills, and interpersonal development. Through free workshops, mentorship programs, job fairs, and tailored support for aspiring entrepreneurs, participants gained access to new opportunities in renewable energy, recycling, education, and food production. As a result, around 40 new businesses were launched, showcasing the transformative potential of the green economy.

A diverse and inclusive approach

The GREEN project emphasized inclusivity, promoting gender equality and regional representation to foster social cohesion. By prioritizing women and individuals from underserved areas, the initiative aimed to empower a generation of young leaders ready to tackle the challenges of climate change and the energy transition.

The program’s success was further bolstered by partnerships with public and educational institutions, including universities. This collaborative ecosystem demonstrated the potential of collective efforts in driving meaningful change within the country’s green economy.

Leaders reflect on the project’s impact

General Director of EFE-Maroc highlighted the project’s role in building a robust network of stakeholders dedicated to preparing youth for the demands of the green economy. "Beyond the numbers, GREEN has mobilized a strong ecosystem committed to training youth and equipping them for the energy transition. The green economy is no longer an abstract concept—it is a source of innovation, employment, and social impact," he stated.

Naira Imedio De Larrinaga, AECID’s coordinator in Morocco, underscored the transformative power of youth. "Youth is the engine of change. Today, we see young people turning ideas into businesses, challenges into opportunities, and dreams into reality. When talent meets the right tools, there are no limits," she remarked.

As the GREEN project concludes, its impact is evident in the new generation of leaders it has cultivated. By fostering skills in sustainable industries, the initiative has laid the groundwork for a brighter, greener future in Morocco, empowering young people to drive environmental and social progress.
