Ghana mourns: Two ministers killed in helicopter crash
Ghana is in mourning following the tragic death of two government ministers in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, according to an official statement from the presidency.
The Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were among the victims of the accident, which occurred in the southern part of the country. The helicopter, carrying five passengers and three crew members, had been reported missing by the Ghana Air Force earlier in the day.
Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, confirmed the deaths and expressed the government's deep condolences. “The President and the entire government extend their heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the families of our fallen comrades and the military personnel who lost their lives in service to the Nation,” Debrah stated.
Other victims of the crash include Alhaji Muniru Muhammad, former Minister of Agriculture and current Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice President of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Ghanaian Armed Forces have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the crash. The country is expected to observe a period of national mourning.
