Germany: Former AfD assistant sentenced for espionage for China

A former parliamentary assistant to a right-wing German politician has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for spying on behalf of China. Jian Guo, a German national, worked for Maximilian Krah, a former Member of the European Parliament and current Bundestag deputy affiliated with the radical wing of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, from September 2019 until his arrest in April 2024.

Prosecutors reported that Guo used his position to transmit over 500 documents from the European Parliament, including some classified as highly sensitive. The Dresden court also convicted a Chinese accomplice, Yaqi X., who received a suspended sentence of one year and nine months for providing logistical information related to Leipzig/Halle airport.

The sentence handed to Guo was lower than the seven-and-a-half-year term initially sought by the prosecution. Meanwhile, investigations continue into Maximilian Krah for alleged corruption and money laundering connected to China.
