Germany’s Inflation Hits 3.3% as Energy Costs Surge to a Three-Year High

Germany’s annual inflation rate climbed to 3.3% in September 2026, reaching its highest level since December 2023 as rising energy costs placed renewed pressure on households and businesses. The Federal Statistical Office confirmed the preliminary figures on Tuesday, highlighting energy prices as a major driver of the latest increase.

Federal Statistical Office President Ruth Brand said inflation had exceeded 3% for the first time in the current year, with particularly sharp increases recorded for petrol, diesel and heating oil. The figures point to renewed pressure on household budgets after inflation had already accelerated to 2.9% in August. Consumer prices also rose by 0.6% between August and September.

Energy products used for transport and household heating cost 14.9% more than a year earlier, marking the third consecutive month of accelerating energy inflation and the steepest annual increase since February 2023. Fuel prices jumped by 37.1%, while light heating oil became approximately 75% more expensive. Prices for firewood, wood pellets and other solid fuels increased by 15.6%.

Not all energy prices followed the same trend. Electricity prices fell by 5.5%, while natural gas prices, excluding operating costs, declined by 2.8%. District heating prices also dropped by 1%, offering some relief to consumers despite the broader rise in energy expenditure.

The surge comes amid disruption to global energy markets linked to the war involving Iran. Uncertainty over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage for international oil and gas trade, has contributed to higher oil prices. Crude oil has recently traded above $100 per barrel, increasing costs for motorists and adding to inflationary pressure across several economies.

Other components of Germany’s consumer price index recorded more moderate increases. Food prices rose by just 0.4% year on year in September, while services became 2.7% more expensive. Basic rents, excluding heating and utility charges, increased by 1.9%.

In response to the pressure on consumers, the German government approved a temporary reduction in fuel taxes of approximately 17 euro cents per litre, effective from October 1 until the end of 2026. Economists estimate that the measure could lower the inflation rate by around 0.2 percentage points, although its actual effect will depend partly on how much of the tax reduction is passed on to customers at the pump.

Despite the planned relief, Germany is expected to record inflation above 2% for a sixth consecutive year in 2026. Higher energy costs have also pushed inflation upward elsewhere in the eurozone. The bloc’s annual inflation rate reached 3.2% in September, its highest level in three years and well above the European Central Bank’s medium-term target of 2%.

The latest figures could complicate the outlook for monetary policy as policymakers weigh persistent price pressures against risks to economic growth. Any further interest-rate decisions by the European Central Bank will depend on incoming inflation data, wage trends and the duration of the energy shock.
