GCC Endorses Libyan 6+6 Committee's Election Compromise
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit held in Doha on Tuesday has officially endorsed the compromise reached by the Joint 6+6 Committee during its deliberations in Morocco in June. This committee was tasked with drafting electoral statutes on behalf of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State.
The concluding statement of the 44th summit, hosted by Qatar, emphasized the significance of the compromise reached on laws governing the election of the head of state and members of parliament in Libya. The Council views this compromise as a positive and constructive step in light of the upcoming presidential and legislative elections.
The GCC restated its unwavering commitment to addressing the Libyan crisis and reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the interests of the Libyan people, as well as the stability, security, and progress of the country.
Moreover, the Council underscored the critical importance of preserving Libya's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. It strongly emphasized the absolute necessity to halt external interference in its internal matters and to expel all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory.
Additionally, GCC leaders reiterated their support for the endeavors of the United Nations envoy in establishing a political resolution, conducting elections, and strengthening state institutions. This support is aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan populace and reinforcing the country's security and stability framework.
