French Senate President Gérard Larcher’s Upcoming Visit to the Southern Provinces of Morocco
French Senate President Gérard Larcher is set to visit Laâyoune in Morocco’s Southern Provinces on February 28, marking his first visit to the region. His trip, which will take place from February 23 to 26, includes several key meetings and events, with Laâyoune being one of the main stops.
Larcher is scheduled to hold talks with Moroccan officials, including Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah, President of the Moroccan Senate, on February 23. On the following day, he will meet with Rachid Talbi Alami, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, and Minister of Foreign Affairs .
On February 25, Larcher will visit Laâyoune, where he will engage in a series of meetings with regional officials, including Abdessalam Bekrate, Wali of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Moulay Hamdi Ould Rachid, President of the Laâyoune Municipal Council, and Sidi Hamdi Ould Rachid, President of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Council.
The visit, which is set to conclude on February 26, will be accompanied by a high-level French delegation. This includes Cédric Perrin, a member of the French Senate from Belfort and head of the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Armed Forces Committee, Christian Cambon, Senator from Val-de-Marne and President of the French-Moroccan Friendship Group, and Hervé Marseille, Senator from Hauts-de-Seine and Vice President of the French-Moroccan Friendship Group.
This visit follows France’s recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Moroccan Sahara on July 30, 2023, paving the way for Gérard Larcher’s visit to Morocco and Laâyoune.
